France is the world blind tasting champion!

The French team was crowned 2020 blind tasting world champion on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at the end of the final organised by La Revue du Vin de France at Château Smith Haut-Lafitte, near Bordeaux.

Inspired and determined, the French dominated for the second year in a row in the final over the Chinese, who came second. The brave Swedes and Finns tied for third with 114 points. The French achieved a historic double: never before had a team won the Championship twice in a row. With this victory, France also became the most crowned nation in the Championship, with three wins since its inception in 2012.

Most of the teams braved the difficulties associated with the Covid epidemic to reach France despite transportation concerns and participate in this very tough competition. They had to identify 12 wines from around the world to win. A particularly delicate exercise when it came to blindly recognising a Tempranillo 2017 from the Picaro Del Aguila estate in Spain or a very unexpected Chasselas 2015 from the Tilleuls winery in Switzerland. After an initial scoring of points, the top 10 teams competed in a final round with 4 additional wines, including a 2016 Chardonnay from Ata Rangi made in Martinborough, New Zealand.

The brilliant winners, the psychoanalyst Éric Bordas, the air traffic controllers Emmanuel Olive and Christophe Boyet and the regional stage trader François Breteau, as well as their coach Vincent Mercier, a retired school teacher.

This victory illustrates the progress made by French tasters, who have long struggled in international tastings of foreign wines.
